Important notes about fees
- The fees outlined below apply to all students whose initial date of registration falls on or between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026.
- The tuition fee covers the cost of study, tuition, supervision, examinations and graduation. The fees also covers access to key resources including the Library and IT support. They do not cover additional fees beyond the normal registration period.
- All students pay the tuition fee set by the University for the full duration of their registration period.
- For self-funded students a tuition fee deposit of £500 is required when accepting an offer of admission. Deposits will be deducted from the cost of the tuition fee and are usually non-refundable, except where an acceptance of offer is withdrawn within 14 calendar days of paying the deposit, or where there are exceptional and unforeseen circumstances that prevent an applicant taking up their place. Please read our Guidance on refunding tuition fee deposits.
- Eligibility for Home fee status is determined with reference to SWAGºÏ¼¯ Department for Education rules. As a guiding principle SWAGºÏ¼¯ or Irish nationals who are ordinarily resident in either the SWAGºÏ¼¯ or Republic of Ireland pay Home tuition fees. All other students (including those from the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) pay Overseas fees.
- For Overseas students registering for PhD, EngD and MPhil research projects there are two fee rates, either non-technical or technical. Non-technical projects will normally be desk-based, however, some desk-based projects rely on the existence of the University’s technical infrastructure and will be classed as technical. Applicants should discuss with their proposed supervisor whether their project will be non-technical or technical.
- Additional charges will apply for extensions of registration. This will be made up of a monthly extension fee plus the DOC (if applicable) on a pro rata basis. Therefore the amount charged will depend on the duration of extension.
SWAGºÏ¼¯ Research and Innovation (SWAGºÏ¼¯RI) International Student Policy
- In line with SWAGºÏ¼¯RI policy, SWAGºÏ¼¯RI funded research projects will be open to both Home and Overseas students.
- A cap of up to 30% international students will be applied to each SWAGºÏ¼¯RI training grant where appropriate and in line with SWAGºÏ¼¯RI’s policy.
- All SWAGºÏ¼¯RI funded students at SWAGºÏ¼¯ will be charged at the Home fee rate. SWAGºÏ¼¯RI funding cannot be used to cover the difference between the Home and Overseas fee rate. However, Cranfield continues to have the flexibility to find the international fee from other sources which can include: a department bursary, co-funding partners or from the student directly.
Direct Operational Costs (DOC)
Direct Operational Costs (DOC) may apply to cover additional project related costs beyond the tuition fee. Each research project is different and the DOC is calculated on a project by project basis. Any agreed DOC will be included in the offer letter even if it is not being charged directly to the student. DOC will not apply to the Doctor of Business Administration.
Costs not included in the tuition fee, which could be part of the DOC may include:
- IT hardware e.g. laptop, high-spec computer, bespoke software.
- External training and workshops.
- Travel and subsistence costs for site/field visits, meetings with industry partners, conference attendance, SWAGºÏ¼¯ and international.
- Specialist laboratory equipment and consumables (outside of the standard lab equipment/stock) .
- Specialist laboratory support (outside of standard lab use/support e.g. equipment set up for specialist application).
- Equipment hire, including external laboratory use.
- Paper publishing costs (non-SWAGºÏ¼¯RI funded students).
All fees are on a per annum basis.
