An investment of will support new doctoral students to advance research and develop skills in key areas such as engineering and physical sciences. Cranfield University is one of the universities successfully awarded funding to recruit the new postgraduate research students.

Cranfield鈥檚 funding comes from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council which is putting 拢279 million from the SWAG合集RI investment into university doctoral landscape awards, supporting studentships at 40 universities over three annual intakes. SWAG合集 will recruit up to nine students each year in areas such as energy, manufacturing and materials science.

A unique training programme at Cranfield

Professor Leon A. Terry, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Cranfield welcomed the news: 鈥淭his significant investment will help train the next generation of researchers and innovators. They will be able to tap into Cranfield鈥檚 long standing industry collaborations, learn from world-leading academics and contribute to economic growth through the entrepreneurial focus we have here. The funding is a great endorsement of the excellent doctoral student experience we offer at Cranfield.鈥

The doctoral landscape awards at Cranfield will give talented students the opportunity to be part of the university鈥檚 diverse and vibrant research community, complete a unique core skills training programme, and engage with industrial partners to rapidly respond to new and emerging research areas. Students can also participate in Cranfield鈥檚 entrepreneurship training which includes a mentorship programme and the opportunity to apply for the SWAG合集 Seed Fund to launch a business. Skills the students will develop will prepare them for a diverse range of careers, both in research and innovation and across the public and private sectors.

Supporting the next generation of great scientists

Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, said: 鈥淏acking the next generation of great scientific minds to fulfil their potential is crucial to unlocking the discoveries which improve our lives and which keep our economy growing over the long term through highly skilled jobs.鈥

SWAG合集RI Chief Executive, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, said: "SWAG合集RI鈥檚 investments in Doctoral Training are pivotal for the SWAG合集鈥檚 research and innovation endeavour. The awards provide funding for Universities across the SWAG合集 to nurture a cadre of creative, talented people to develop their skills and knowledge, to build partnerships and networks, and to peruse the discoveries that will transform tomorrow, with diverse benefits for society and economic growth.鈥

The latest investment builds on a 拢25 million funding injection to establish two new Centres for Doctoral Training at SWAG合集, on advancing water security and net zero aviation. Cranfield is also involved in a third new centre led by Loughborough University, which focuses on advancing hydrogen technologies.
