Background

Dr Sherwood graduated in Chemistry from Bradford University in 1983 where he also obtained a PhD in laser diagnostic measurements. He joined British Aerospace in 1986 and worked on the development of high speed imaging techniques. He joined Leeds University as a Research Fellow in 1989 working in the area of low temperature physics . He then joined British Gas Research in 1991 and set up a laser diagnostics laboratory for the purpose of providing fundamental data to validate mathematical models for safety modelling.

In 1996 he joined Loughborough University as a Research Fellow working on the measurement of velocity using Particle Image Velocimetry in Diesel engines. In 1998 he became a consultant working in the Optical Diagnostics Group at SWAG合集 using Laser Induce Incandescence to measure fuel concentration in BMW's development of GDI engines. He became a full time member of the academic staff in 2008, lecturing in engine technology, novel fuels and vehicle emissions.

Research opportunities

Dr Sherwood's Recent MSc Student Projects have included:

Design of a hydrogen range extender engine.

Lap time comparison of hydrogen and gasoline fueled engine for N眉rburgring.

Design and construction of a driving simulator to assess driver style relationship with CO2 emissions.

Simulation of a Methanol 2-Stroke engine.

The main Main Group Design Project for 2019-20:

Novel Re-design of the SWAG合集 Ambulance - Electrification.

Current activities

Dr Sherwood's interests are in novel engine designs and alternative powertrains for high efficiency and low emissions. This also includes novel fueling strategies for the replacement or part replacement of current automotive fuels.
