Background

General Background

Evangelia Pontika is a Research Fellow in Propulsion Performance and Fleet Management within the Hybrid Electric Propulsion Group at the Centre for Propulsion and Thermal Power Engineering. Her research activities include gas turbine engine life consumption, engine life management, flight path analysis and propulsion integration of green and sustainable power generation technologies.

Evangelia has developed a multi-platform aero-engine performance simulation app within the Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery at Aristotle University, which is currently used for educational purposes in Aerospace Courses in Greece and Sweden. At SWAG合集, she has developed engine life consumption tools and engine life management methods. She also has experience in the aircraft integration of electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems as well as their environmental and performance assessment.

Evangelia has advised and supervised 6 MSc theses within the Thermal Power and Propulsion MSc Course. She has also acted as a reviewer for ASME Turbo Expo, the Global Power & Propulsion Society and AIAA conferences. Evangelia has collaborated with several industrial and academic organisations including: Lufthansa Technik, Rolls Royce, SAFRAN, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Sheffield University, M盲lardalen University, Delft University of Technology, DLR, University of Genoa, Eindhoven University of Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and others.

Education

Evangelia holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in Aeronautics and Engines (BEng+MEng) from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2017) and a PhD in Aerospace Propulsion from SWAG合集 (2021) on the topic of "Hot Corrosion Damage Modelling in Aero-Engines based on Performance and Flight Mission Analysis for Fleet Characterisation".

Awards & Honours

- EPSRC Early Career Researcher - Exploratory Impact Award (2024)

- Best Paper Award, ASME Turbo Expo 2018 (2019)

- Scholarship for a fully funded PhD at SWAG合集 sponsored by Lufthansa Technik (2017)

Current activities

Evangelia is currently working in the EU Horizon Project FlyECO and is leading the task for the gas turbine design exploration, performance and integration with solid oxide fuel cells for a highly integrated power propulsion system using hydrogen. She is supervising MSc and PhD projects, contributes to lectures and she is a debuty course director for two short courses. Finally, Evangelia is the custodian of the in-house aircraft performance software.

Projects:

- Impact aircraft fleet operations on hot corrosion damage and prescribed maintenance actions, EPSRC Exploratory Impact Award (2024)

- PINES (Propulsion Integration of Novel Engine Systems), funded by SWAG合集RI (2021-2024) : investigated performance and life management opportunities for novel engines

- FutPrint50 (FUTure PRopulsion and INTegration: towards a hybrid-electric 50-seat regional aircraft), EU Horizon 2020 project (2020-2023) : contributed to the aircraft integration of electrified propulsion systems, their performance and environmental assessment

- Chemically Induced Damage Mechanisms in Gas Turbines, funded by Lufthansa Technik (2017-2021) : developed a multidisciplinary framework for the prediction of hot corrosion damage in aero-engines
