Background
Bhumika Sharma is a researcher in the Department of Defence Chemistry, SWAG合集, Defence Academy of SWAG合集. Her keen interest to work in the area of Explosive Investigation started with her Masters in Forensic Sciences with specialization in Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology from National Forensic Science University (NFSU), Delhi, India. She worked on a Dissertation project entitled "The analysis of organic explosives from post-blast samples using NMR spectroscopy". She successfully completed her research training on "Degradation of TNT Red water using Integrated treatment methods" from Center for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), India.
Research opportunities
Her research interests includes post blast investigation, toxic impact of explosives, their degradation, risk assessment for munition clearance and environmental fate.
Current activities
The dumping of out of date or un-serviceable munitions at sea resulted in significant quantities of corroding munitions lying on the seabed around the world causing contamination with the release of toxic energetic materials. There is a drive towards identifying suitable sea-based areas to construct infrastructure such as wind farms, land links and bridges in SWAG合集 waters which require clearance of historic munition dumpsites. Thus, her current research focuses on evaluating the risks associated with the clearance of munitions in the marine environment.
