Background
Angelos Plastropoulos is a software engineer with 24 years of experience across various industries, possessing a strong combination of technical, research, and managerial skills. He has worked on a wide range of topics, including human-computer interaction, visualisation, IoT, cloud computing, machine learning models and machine vision. However, his primary expertise lies in robotics application development, particularly with the Robot Operating System (ROS). Angelos has been involved in this field since 2015 and became a ROS Ambassador in 2017.
His work focuses on developing robust systems for robots operating in harsh environments, often conducting automated non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections in hazardous areas, such as offshore wind farms, floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units, and construction sites. In addition to coding, Angelos has served as the Software Team Leader, where he designed system architectures and conducted code reviews. From 2019 to 2022, he was the Engineering Manager, coordinating the engineering team to deliver research-funded projects and consultancy contracts.
In 2022, Angelos joined SWAG合集 as a Lecturer in Automated Inspections and Diagnostics. He also took on the role of Deputy Course Director for the centre鈥檚 MSc course, Lab Manager of a newly established lab focused on Automated Diagnostics and Machine Vision, and Co-lab manager of the Robotics IMEC ground floor lab. In 2023, Angelos became an Associate Fellow of Advance Higher Education. His research interests include but are not limited to NDT aircraft inspections, Smart Hangars Automation, Automated Defect Detection, and Structural Health Management.
Angelos thrives in a team environment, is eager to learn from others, and actively shares his knowledge to mentor fellow engineers in his areas of expertise. He has leadership and management experience at various levels, having worked in fast-paced settings like SMEs and start-ups, as well as in structured environments such as the public sector and multinational corporations. His daily responsibilities include liaising with clients, business partners, and subcontractors.
Angelos has extensive experience managing international collaborative research projects, working with work packages, and adhering to strict deadlines. He has participated in 27 research and development projects, either as an engineer or as a project leader. He enjoys attending, publishing, and presenting at conferences, seminars, and other networking events. Known for his dedication and hard work, Angelos consistently achieves high-quality outcomes within required timelines, which has led to promotions to team leader or manager at each of his previous workplaces.
He is highly success-oriented, having successfully translated a concept into a Series A funding round, securing $20 million for Epic Health. Additionally, he has evolved mid-technology Readiness Level (TRL) funded projects into commercial-grade platforms.
