This course thoroughly introduces the turbulent flow simulations methods using Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS). More advanced turbulence modelling techniques, such as Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), are explained.
In this course the turbulence modelling is thoroughly discussed, starting from the RANS and up to the DNS. The course introduce students to closure methods for the Navier-Stokes equations as applied to turbulent and transitional flows, and the classical physical modelling approximations required to achieve this.
LES is increasingly becoming an established scientific computing approach for predicting transitional and turbulent flows. It is used extensively to elucidate the physics of turbulence and to compute flows of industrial relevance.
The course discusses the theoretical and numerical approaches, and best practice when conducting an LES. Examples are given of LES of industrial problems, demonstrating methods of analysis, verification and visualisation.

Course structure
This course features practical examples. All delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course.What you will learn
Upon completion of the course you will be able to:
- conduct an effective CFD simulation of an unsteady turbulent flow;
- understand the underlying flow physics; make a trade-off between different applicable LES models;
- select an appropriate grid resolution based on the flow physics;
- and verify and visualise the simulation.
Core content
The course features lectures on:
- Introduction to unsteady flow physics
- The concept of filtering
- The LES and DNS methods
- LES modelling approaches
- Wall modelling
- Multiphase/multi-species mixing
- Analysis and visualisation of unsteady flow fields.
Who should attend
This course provides a stimulating and vibrant learning environment with interaction between current postgraduate students and external delegates. The course is ideal for those who are:
- involved in or would like to learn and perform the simulations of complex turbulent flows and need detailed best practice guidelines;
- researchers/students who plan to or are currently studying turbulence and/or RANS methods;
- experienced engineers looking for a refresher course on the physics of turbulent flows and current cutting-edge modelling techniques with a particular focus on unsteady flows.
