The Water Science Institute undertakes globally leading research and post graduate teaching in water and wastewater process science, engineering, governance and policy to:

  • propel sustainable solutions to combat the multiple threats and challenges being faced by our water resources, assets and services
  • deliver collaborative cutting-edge discovery science on the transformation, removal and recovery processes in water wastewater treatment systems
  • equip graduates with the technical and management skills to elicit change and transformation

We have been working in water for over 40 years. Our academic and research staff, including scientists, engineers, technologists, policy specialists and social scientists, are engaged in delivering postgraduate teaching, research, consultancy and training in an international arena.

We have a cutting edge MSc programme in Water and Wastewater Engineering and support a large cohort of PhD and EngD research students. We work closely with a range of clients across industry and government helping them to address their water challenges and make a progressive contribution to a sustainable and water-secure world.

Without appropriate management, whether for municipal supply, agriculture, industry, community development or maintenance of a sustainable environment, we risk over-exploitation and contamination of our planet’s most precious resource. Our core research activities are therefore focused around the following main areas:

Our ethos is to provide an environment which is intellectually challenging, where research excellence is encouraged and where students, staff and ideas flourish.
