Subham Gupta (MSc Astronautics and Space Engineering 2018), Chief Executive Officer of Space Resources Laboratory Ltd and recipient of the 2024 Excellence in Achievement Award for Recent Aerospace Graduates, is an aerospace pioneer.
When Subham Gupta arrived at SWAGϼ in 2017 to pursue an MSc in Astronautics and Space Engineering, he was already a man on a mission. In this interview, Subham reflects on his incredible journey from a starry-eyed child captivated by the cosmos to a leader shaping the future of sustainable space exploration.
A moment of recognition
“Winning this award is an immensely meaningful moment for me,” Subham shares. “It represents recognition for my journey and contributions to aerospace innovation, particularly in sustainable space exploration. This award is a humbling reminder that persistence, growth, and dedication eventually lead to fulfilling achievements.”
Subham’s work has had a profound impact on the aerospace sector. His innovative contributions include leading the development of SRMSAT-2, a satellite set to advance to low lunar orbit, and designing propulsion systems at Space Resources Laboratory aimed at mitigating space debris. Under his leadership, Space Resources Laboratory has flourished, earning accolades such as 'Aerospace Company of the Year 2022,' and his inclusion in Forbes' 30 Under 30 (Europe) in Manufacturing & Industry 2023 underscores his prominence in the field.
A childhood dream takes flight
“As a child, I was utterly enchanted by the cosmos,” Subham recalls. “Watching space documentaries on the Discovery Channel instilled in me a desire to unravel the mysteries of the universe.” This fascination blossomed into a career dedicated to space exploration. However, Subham’s ambition doesn’t stop there. “I aspire to one day don the mantle of an astronaut and venture beyond our world,” he says, a dream rooted in his earliest aspirations.
Cranfield and beyond
Reflecting on his time at Cranfield, Subham attributes much of his success to the university’s unique environment. “SWAGϼing at Cranfield made me realise I had the potential to do much more. It introduced me to the world of startups and brought space exploration closer than I ever imagined.” Late nights spent working on his thesis in the King’s Norton Library are among his fondest memories.
Subham’s journey has been marked by resilience and innovation, qualities that have earned him the endorsement of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the SWAGϼ Government as an “Exceptional Talent.” He offers this advice to new students: “Cranfield is the best place to transform your journey into a successful one. You just need to explore.”
Heroes and hobbies
Subham draws inspiration from his father and Sir Isaac Newton. “Newton’s profound contributions to science and mathematics revolutionised how we understand the universe. His unparalleled intellect and curiosity continue to inspire me,” Subham says.
When he’s not working to advance the aerospace industry, Subham enjoys skydiving and even writes stand-up comedy in his spare time. “I’m a licensed skydiver, and you might catch me at an open mic someday,” he adds with a smile.
Looking to the stars
Subham’s bucket list reflects his relentless pursuit of adventure and knowledge:
- Obtain a private pilot’s licence.
- Achieve a Level B skydiving certification.
- Go to space.
These goals perfectly align with his personal motto: “The sky is no limit.”
Inspiring the next generation
Subham Gupta’s story is a testament to the transformative power of passion, perseverance, and innovation. His journey from Cranfield to leading the charge in sustainable space exploration demonstrates what is possible when determination meets opportunity. For aspiring aerospace professionals, Subham’s career serves as a shining example of how to reach for the stars — and beyond.
