Background

Angus started out life as a Chartered Accountant (KPMG) and it took 10 years in large corporate (ICL, GSK) and a Cranfield MBA to figure out that his passion lay with smaller entities. His MBA dissertation was used to raise capital for a start-up, and he got a taste for early-stage technology with fast growth potential. He raised funds for various technology businesses, staying either as CFO, NED or advisor.

In 2001 he founded an outsourced accounting & fractional CFO business, primarily as a vehicle to do this consulting work and sold that business to an MBO. Angus then co-founded a renewable energy business, also selling that to an MBO. Two subsequent roles Angus was initially joined as CFO and was subsequently appointed CEO; one was a medical diagnostic business, and the more recent one was a radar business, Blighter Surveillance Systems.

Before Angus was appointed CEO Blighter had been operating around financial break-even and was relatively unknown in the market. Angus led the Blighter team through an incredible growth journey he describes as a “consensual revolution based on trust†– changes to Board and management teams, raising capital, engaging the whole team in vision, mission, plans, a clear commercial drive, and ultimately being fully transparent (nuggets and warts) with staff. Trust was built by the whole team knew what was going on. The result was great team energy and buy-in to the plan, generating huge growth (nearly 3-fold over 4 years) and profitable business.

Angus now advises owner-managers across various industries ranging from B2B product, professional services, early-stage engineering, and a B2C, and turnover from <£1m to £40m.
