Course structure

This course is delivered via a mixture of lectures and group activities.

What you will learn

On successful completion of this short course you will be able to:
Examine the nature of impurities in water and wastewater, their concentrations and significance,
Explain the basic principles of conventional treatment processes,
Select appropriate processes, depending on the nature of the impurities to be removed and the intended use of the treated water/effluent,
Design a flow-sheet showing how unit processes are selected based on incoming water or wastewater quality.

Core content

Classification significance and concentration ranges of impurities in water including: suspended and dissolved solids, organic and inorganic compounds, trace contaminants, pathogens,
Physical methods for removing particulates: clarification, filtration, screening and grit removal, sedimentation, filtration.
Biological processes for wastewater treatment, both aerobic and anaerobic, including processes such as activated sludge, trickling filters and sludge digestion,
Chemical dosing, including precipitation; coagulation and flocculation; disinfection and chemical oxidation,
Adsorption and ion exchange,
Examples of flow sheets and unit operations in treatment plants.
