This course aims to introduce course members to computationally-based flow modelling, applicable mainly to single and multi-phase flows.

Providing experience in the use of a widely available commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes through enhanced understanding of the complex viscous flow and heat transfer phenomena involved.

Course structure

This course is delivered through a balanced combination of lectures and practical sessions over a week. Two days will cover an introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics and three days will be used for practical sessions.

What you will learn

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Assemble and evaluate the different components of a CFD process,
  • Explain the governing equations for fluid flows and how to solve them computationally,
  • Compare and contrast various methods for simulating turbulent flows applicable to mechanical and process engineering,
  • Set-up simulations and evaluate a practical problem using a commercial CFD package,
  • Design CFD modelling studies for use in industrial design of complex systems.

Core content

  • Introduction to CFD & thermo-fluids
    • introduction to the physics of thermo-fluids,
    • governing equations (continuity, momentum, energy and species conservation) and state of the art Computational Fluid Dynamics including modelling, grid generation, simulation, and high performance computing,
    • case study of an Industrial problem and the physical process that CFD can be used to analyse.
  • Computational Engineering Exercise
    • specification for a CFD simulation,
    • requirements for accurate analysis and validation for multi scale problems,
    • introduction to turbulence & practical applications of Turbulence Models,
    • introduction to turbulence and turbulent flows,
    • traditional turbulence modelling.
  • Advanced Turbulence Modelling
    • Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes equations (RANS) simulations,
    • Large Eddy Simulation (LES).
  • Practical sessions:
    • a fluid process problem will be solved employing the widely-used industrial flow solver FLUENT,
    • lectures will be followed by practical sessions to set up and simulate a problem incrementally,
    • practical will cover the entire CFD process including geometric modelling, grid generation, flow solver setting-up, analysis, visualisation and validation.
